The Eyeball

By: Rachael Liu

Andrew, Peter, Grace, and Mary were best friends because they had all been on the same soccer team since the first grade, went to the same school, had some of the same teachers, and generally had a lot in common.

One day, they decided to go to the park because the weather was just right for soccer. The hot summer sun beat down hard on the kids. They were in the middle of an intense soccer match when all of a sudden, a little kid, probably in kindergarten, kicked the ball into the bushes that lead to the Diamond Forest. There were a lot of creepy rumors about the Diamond Forest. Apparently, a man went in there and never came back. Grace went to get the ball while Andrew, Peter, and Mary talked about how annoying the kid was.

“AHHHHHHHHHH!”

Andrew, Peter, and Mary reflexively turned their heads to where the sound came from. Then they started running to the bushes to see what was wrong. Grace came out of the bushes holding the soccer ball in one hand and something else in the other. As they leaned closer, they found out it was an eyeball! That wasn’t the scariest part; it looked like a human’s eyeball.

They had no idea what to do, so they made the worst possible decision, they walked into the Diamond Forest thinking the rumors were fake.

Even though the sun was shining, the forest was as dark as night and shaded by the moss-covered trees. Thankfully, they had their phones which had a built-in GPS. As they walked deeper, it started getting darker and darker. Andrew, the nerd of the group, made an observation. He noticed that several bugs didn’t have eyes. This was probably because it was so dark, it didn’t make a difference if you had eyes or not. He was about to tell this to the group when his thoughts were interrupted. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw an arm. “Guys, look, it's an arm,” he said, “Oh my god! It’s an arm!”

Lo and behold, on the ground was a human arm.

“Who could have done this,” asked Mary.

“I don’t know, but we should get out of here. This is actually getting creepy,” says Andrew.

“No,” Peter exclaimed, “We have to find out what’s going on! And plus, what are we gonna do with the arm and the eyeball? Woah that’s the weirdest sentence I’ve ever said in my life.”

“Stop joking around Peter,” says a very concerned Grace.

“But Peter is right, what are we going to do with the arm and the eyeball?” asks Andrew.

Finally, they decide to call the police. But when they pull out their phones, they don’t have any reception. This really frustrates them, but Mary suggests using the GPS on their phones. To their horror, their phones have been completely drained of juice. The group starts to panic when Peter finds a trail of blood from the arm. They decide to follow it since they have nowhere to go anyway.

The trail of blood ends at a bush where Andrew emerges first. What he sees shocks him. He tells the group to duck down and not move any further. They all peered through the bush to see what Andrew had seen and there laid a dead body with one missing eye and one missing arm, blood oozing out, creating a puddle. The body had been cut in half. The legs were missing, but the upper-body was still there…and moving. The person was still conscious and the lips mouthed, “Help me…”

Andrew screamed for everyone to keep moving in one direction and to not stop running. They ran for a long time and everyone was tired, but they finally reached the end of the forest. When they saw the rays of the sun, it was like seeing an angel. While everyone else was whooping and hollering, Andrew stayed quiet. Peter noticed this first and asked what was wrong.

“I’m happy we’re all alive and out of the woods, but I saw a person…or at least a figure of a person.”

The group decided to not think about it for now and to focus on getting back home and calling the police. They had emerged from a random side of the forest and had to get back. They soon found out they were behind a school and ran for help.

Soon, their parents had come to pick each of them up while the police investigated the forest and asked the quad what they had seen. Grace still had the eyeball, so she gave it to the police. The arm and the body were still in the woods.

A week later, Mary comes running to Andrew, Peter, and Grace.

“Guys look at the news!”

There on the first page read, “Police investigation reveals Gregory Mason’s body.”

As they read on, they figured out the whole truth.

Gregory Mason was the one who went into the forest and never came back. The rumors were true. The murderer hadn’t been found, but they had his fingerprint and were looking for him.

Even to this day, the murderer hasn’t been found. They call him the trailer because he leaves a trail of body-parts whenever he kills another victim. The four friends are now much older. They graduated and found jobs. But they’ll never forget what happened. What’s even creepier is that they still see weird things, like floating objects, random things appearing, and sounds at night.
