The Earth Problem

By: Efran ZHao

Earth can only support life because of its location in our solar system. It is in the ‘Goldilocks Zone’, a zone in which it is not too hot or too cold. There are other planets that are in this ‘zone’ too. 557.7 light years away from Earth, Kepler-186f is one of those planets. And there is life there. Carbon based life, like Earth. But they communicate and think differently. Their Thought is one, trillions of their inhabitants think as one. They do not argue or fight over what to do, for they only have one decision.

Billions of years passed, and they went on with their life. But soon they faced a problem. The sun belonging to their solar system, Kepler-186, was dying. It would soon expand, scorching the surface and eventually the entirety of the planet. They needed a way to survive. Looking for possible ways to relocate, the Mind found a distant planet, 557.7 light years away, called Earth. But this planet already had inhabitants. Looking upon the life of these inhabitants, the great Mind of Kepler-186f did not want to ruin all the lives of these people. Now, the Mind had to come up with a decision, which would decide the fate of them. The Mind was undecided for once in its existence. For once, it came to know of the state of confusion and uncertainty. The Mind was peaceful, but it had to survive. It started to debate itself over the consequences of Earth. The problem was, it was only one Mind, so they had a limited point of view. They never once thought of looking for another suitable planet, but instead only focused on Earth.

Throughout its debate, argument broke out inside. And the people started clashing through the confusion of uncertainty. The more that fell, the less thought of Mind. The less thought of Mind, the more confusion, the more fallen.

And then there were none.
