U.S. Government Creates Laws to Limit LGBTQ+ Rights

By: Selena Sun

The U.S. government is proposing lots of laws that affect the rights of LGBTQ+ people. For example, the government proposed laws to limit LGBTQ+ people’s bathroom choices to only what gender is on their IDs. These laws are being debated at all levels of government. So far, 48 laws have been passed and 105 laws have been defeated. The situation is not the same in all states. Some states have proposed laws that seem anti-LGBTQ+, while other states have none.

In Canada, LGBTQ+ rights are part of the law. In fact, May 17th is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. While the situation for LGBTQ+ people is moving to become more inclusive and pleasant , some states, such as Tennessee, have banned drag shows.

Many schools have people trying to remove books about sexual education and more resources about it. Some say it’s for their children to have an easy youth without a “confusing education.” In fact, the amount of hate crimes reported to the police in Canada targeting LGBTQ+ went from 265 in 2019 to 423 in 2021.
