Schools Report on Concussion recovery

By: Derrick Chen

Many schools in Australia are reporting on what happens after students get a concussion. This action is part of a research project being led by Dr. Reidar Lystad from Macquarie University. Given that one-eighth of children will have a concussion before the age of 18, proper post-concussion procedures are important to enact in schools. These procedures can lower concussion rates in schools. Research shows that kids with concussions have negative outcomes in their learning capabilities. These poor school performances can lead to difficulties later in life. Most concussions are due to sports injuries and tripping incidents. Many parents are worried that their kids will get a concussion when playing sports, leading several of them to pull their kids out of sports classes.

However, experts developed new rules and policies to ensure that appropriate responses are provided to students after incidents and injuries, including a timeline for minimum recovery and duty of care obligations. With these new guidelines, students with concussions can get rest and treatment in time.
