Why Everyone Loves 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

By: Rhea Agrawal

Avatar: the Last Airbender, a Nickelodeon show that originally aired from 2005 to 2008, centers around a 12-year old airbender named Aang and his journey as the avatar. The Fire Nation is trying to take over the world, and since Aang is the avatar, master of all four elements, he is the only one who is able to stop them. He travels around the four nations to learn different types of bending (water, earth, and fire) so that he can restore peace and balance to the rest of the world. He is joined by Katara, a waterbender, and her brother Sokka, adding more people to the group as time goes on. The show, already loved by many, gained even more popularity because Netflix added all three seasons to their platform on May 15th. The show smashed the Top Ten List record, holding a place on the list for 61 consecutive days.

Although designed to be a kid’s show, Avatar appeals to grownups as well. The script does a phenomenal job of showcasing complex ideas while still making it easy for kids to understand. The show is emotionally powerful and shadows topics that have a lot of gravity. All the characters are so incredibly crafted and every character has their own unique personality and flaws. The characters are extremely well developed, and it is easy to understand why each character acts the way that they do. Even the villainous characters are exceptional. Each episode is its own delight filled with humor that everyone can enjoy.

Avatar has numerous five star reviews, and I personally would also rate it 5 stars. Everything about the show is perfect and there is nothing to change. Everything from the animation to the script is completely spot on and easy to follow. Usually, it is pretty hard to rewatch episodes from shows, but I have found that I can rewatch any episode at any time. At first, I did not understand why the show suddenly became so popular, but after watching a few episodes, I was hooked. Avatar: the Last Aribender will continue to be mine and many others’ favorite show for many years to come.
