Unexpected Turns

By: Grace Zhang

Swords clashed as they fought, striking down the supposedly immortal hilichurls hell had sent. Wiping off blood, Aline and Willow leaned against the wall.

“When do you think they’ll realize these guys are NOT immortal?” Willow asked Aline.

“When they finally get a brain,” Aline scoffed.

“Or maybe just a singular brain cell,” laughed Willow.

Sighing, the two of them headed toward their apartment.

It was nearly past midnight when Aline heard a sound coming from under her. She held her hand out to see little blue bolts of light erupting from her palm, which looked almost identical to lightning. As soon as she held both hands up, lightning immediately shot out of her palms and hit a picture frame, which burst into astounding Prismarine flames. Upon the noise, Willow burst into the room, looking down. She grinned at Aline who looked up with a look of terror.

“We can finally defeat the industry leader!” Willow exclaimed, prancing with joy. “The last thing we need to do is meet them, and then killing will be easy as pie.”

“Once they actually get their lazy butts up and realize that the “guards” are gone, they’ll realize we’re more powerful than them.”

There was suddenly a roar of frustration from the castle; so loud it could have awoken everyone in the poor kingdom. They leapt up and ran towards the castle, ready to give the killing blow.

As Aline ran, she couldn’t help but be excited to finally meet whoever was behind the industry, the hypnosis, the enslavement, and so much more she couldn’t bear to think about. They had killed almost her entire family, and almost taken Willow. Now was finally time to take revenge.

“Are you ready?” Willow asked

“Those people enslaved me, took you from me, and pretended to execute you,” Aline stated flatly. “Don’t you remember the time they tried to kill you but didn’t actually kill you and the fact that you’re supposed to be dead?”

Willow sighed. “Well we’re finally here,” she said spotting what looked like a summoning circle. “Let’s go!”

They reached the summoning circle, to find an Ouija board.

“What should we ask?” Aline asked Willow. “And why the heck is this here?”

“Who are you and why are you burning down the world,” Willow said, giggling.

“G-O D-O Y-O-U-R M-A-T-H H-O-M-E-W-O-R-K” the board slowly spelled out.

“Huh? Why is it-” said Aline in visible confusion.

Willow smacked her hand up to her forehead.

“Of course, how did we not see it,” she groaned.

“See what- ohh.” Aline gasped, and became as silent as a mouse.

The grumpy, short shadow of Aline and Willow’s mom stood, illuminated by the glowing candles of the summoning circle.

“What are you two doing, go do your calculus homework and stop playing dress-up haiyaa. What kind of silly powers do you guys have? Your only use is to do homework, get good grades, and not make me look like a bad parent.” she said, in a thick Asian accent.

“But mom, we’ve already graduated from Harvard with doctorate law degrees!” whined Willow.

“Then why aren’t you sitting the Supreme Court, making money for me?”

[Server]: -100 self-respect.

[Server]: +100 emotional damage

“Now go practice violin and piano and maybe you can perform at Carnegie Hall!” exclaimed the Tiger mom.

Only then, did they realize, the industry had gotten away. They had ruined their chance at revenge, and they just HAD to see their dear sweet mother while doing it. In fact, it was because of their dear mother, who turned out to be the one behind the industry, that they had wasted their time on nothing.
