Trump Would Risk Lives Just to Win Points in Election

By Vincent Liu

On Wednesday, July 8, Trump threatened to withhold federal money if schools don’t return to in-person learning. On Twitter, Trump claimed some other countries’ schools have opened schools and have returned to in-person learning  “with no problems.” While Trump might care for the people, he most likely just wants to score more points for the November election. The president did not mention that his reelection prospects may depend on “whether voters see the country as having recovered from the economic and social devastation of the novel coronavirus pandemic.” (The Washington Post) According to The Washington Post, “The  president of the nation’s largest education union said Trump is more interested in scoring points for the November election than in keeping students safe.” (The Washington Post) Through this event, Trump has proven he is either unable to even understand the statistics that many people are dying, or he has prioritized other concerns over public health. He just wants more points in the election even though opening schools again could put thousands of lives at risk. It’s also not the first time Trump has threatened people with his power. He has also threatened to fire Dr. Fauci and has threatened many other things. Although educators also want to be back in school, they want to do it in the safest way possible. “Educators want nothing more than to be back in classrooms and on college campuses with our students, but we must do it in a way that keeps students, educators, and communities safe,” said Lily Eskelsen García, president of the National Education Association. Trump, on the other hand, appears to be prioritizing a return to school regardless of public health guidelines." That is why many people dislike him and lots of people make fun of him.
