These Dark Roses: A Poem

By Jasmine Wang

In her short life,

She’s walked to this door many times.

Each time,

She becomes scared of the uncertainty behind the door.

Sometimes,

She sits down and counts

The petals of the dark roses.

Should she walk through,

Should she not. Should she,

Should she not. Sometimes,

She’s able to stick her hand through,

Sometimes even her head,

But she never walks through.

She wonders,

Will it be painful?

Will it be peaceful?

Will anything really change?

Maybe one day,

She’ll find out.
