Surviving a Shark Attack
By: Cathy Cai
17-year-old Addison Bethea got attacked by a shark on Thursday, June 6, 2022, at Keaton Beach in Florida. Addison was scalloping with her brother when a shark bites her. During an interview, she said "And the next thing I know something latches onto my leg and I was like that's not right. And then I look and it was a big old shark. Then I remember from watching Animal Planet like...punch it in the nose or something like that. And I couldn't get around to his nose the way he bit me." Addison’s brother, a firefighter and medical technician went to help her. When Addison came up, he saw blood everywhere and the shark. He swam to Addison, grabbed her, and pushed them to get them apart, but the shark just kept coming. So, he grabbed Addison and swam backward yelling for help. Her brother put a tourniquet on her leg to control the bleeding while they were brought back to the beach on a boat. Addison suffered serious injuries and had to be sent to a hospital in Tallahassee.
