In this reading lab, we will focus on building a stronger vocabulary, which will ultimately help your student to read more complex and difficult text with ease.

Objective: Students will be able to unpack the meaning of words by identifying antonyms, synonyms, categories, characteristics, and an example.


Essential Questions:

  1. What are synonyms and antonyms and why are they important to word meanings?

  2. How can categories or characteristics allow us to unpack the word meanings?

  3. Why do examples help us understand new words?

  4. Why is it important to develop our vocabulary?


Enduring Understandings:

  1. Synonyms are words that have similar meanings to the target word while antonyms are words that have opposite meanings.

  2. Categories like parts of speech allow us to figure out the functioning of words.

  3. Characteristics and examples allow us to use context clues to help us understand challenging words.

  4. It is important to develop our vocabulary in order to read more complex texts.


Standards:


Grade 6: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 6 topic or subject area.


Grade 7: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 7 topic or subject area.


Grade 8: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.8.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 8 topic or subject area.
