Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey smashes record at the auction

By: Ethan & Connie Cao

Michael Jordan’s game-worn jersey has been finally put at auction. Its final price? 14.9 million dollars! This made it the most expensive sports memorabilia in history! The jersey was expected to make $4.5 to $7.4 million dollars but the final price was more than double! This crazy price was totally unexpected!

The previous record was obtained by an Argentine soccer player, Diego Maradona. His jersey was sold for $13.8 million dollars. Jordan’s jersey was his most-profited memorabilia ever. His second most pricey object was his relic card, which sold for $4 million.

The 2020 documentary shows Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls making their way to winning their sixth championship in eight years. Micheal Jordan later sold his jersey that he wore when he played. Another basketball player, Kobe Bryant also sold his jersey for $3.7 million.

“In the weeks since we announced the auction, there’s been palpable excitement from not only sports fans, but collectors alike who are eager to own a rarefied piece of history, said (name?) Sotheby’s head of streetwear after the September 15 auction. “Yet again, today’s record-breaking result … solidifies Michael Jordan as the undisputed GOAT, proving his name and incomparable legacy is just as relevant as it was nearly 25 years ago.”
