China Plans to Attack Taiwan: The Rest of the World is Watching

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has slipped the grasp of mainstream media, China’s looming assault on Taiwan may be a growing concern for the United States. With China and the US’s relationship souring, Beijing might make its move soon.

China views the United States as a threat due to its support of the small island. While China has been sending warplanes to Taiwan, the United States has been sending naval ships. Beijing reports the United States has been “interfering” with their plans and “would not hesitate to fight” if Taiwan were to become an independent country.

When asked about China’s plans to overtake Taiwan, Gen Milley, the US joint chiefs of staff’s chariman, says, “In terms of capability I think China clearly is developing a capability. President Xi [Jinping] has mentioned that in public forums, he's mentioned it in speeches, that he has challenged the PLA [China's People's Liberation Army] to develop the capability to attack Taiwan at some point in time.” He also adds that the U.S. needs to observe the nation very closely to identify any warnings that China might give.

Although some fear that China invading Taiwan will expedite a World War, analysts say it's not likely. Many officials agree that the attack may be too costly and damaging for not only China but also the entire world. Taiwan considers itself independent, while China believes it’s just an extension of the mainland. If Taiwan were to declare independence, China would try to take back the island. However, for now, China has repeatedly said they don’t want war, while the United States is hesitant to withdraw money from its military budget.

For now, China won’t challenge Taiwanese sovereignty. However, geopolitics is unpredictable.
