Angel Blue Leaves Italian Festival that used Blackface
By: Cecilia Zhang
Angel Blue, an American soprano, withdrew from Verdi’s “La Traviata” because they were using blackface.
“I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that I will not be singing La Traviata at Arena di Verona this summer as planned,” she said on Instagram, “As many of you know, Arena di
Verona recently made the decision to utilize blackface makeup in a recent production of Aida. Let me be perfectly clear: the use of a black face under any circumstances, artistic or otherwise, is a deeply misguided practice based on archaic theatrical tradition which has no place in modern society.”
Blue, who is also black continued to call Arena di Verona “offensive”, “humiliating”, and “outright racist.” She said that it is not “good conscience” if she associates with a company that supports blackface. Her post got more than 1000 comments of support.
Since Blue withdrew from Arena Di Verona they have defended the decision to use blackface “We have no reason nor intent whatsoever to offend and disturb anyone’s sensibility.” For now, Blue still is listed on the performances of La Traviata.
