Sara Gideon wins nomination for seat in Senate, challenging Collins

Brianna Zhang

On Tuesday, Sara Gideon, the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, won the Democratic nomination to become Susan Collins’ challenger for a seat in the Senate.

Collins is a Republican senator representing Maine. Gideon hopes, with the help of, including the Senate Democratic campaign arm, that she can challenge Collins’ position as senator.

Under the Trump Administration, Collins’ reputation has suffered greatly, especially after voting for Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court.

“Senator Collins has changed, and Mainers deserve better,” Says Gideon. “Mainers deserve a senator who will bring people together to overcome the challenges we face.”

Gideon announced her campaign in June 2019 after Collins’ vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation, however with coronavirus restrictions, it has made it difficult for her to campaign in person. Because of this, her meetings and fundraisers have made a digital turn.
